A John Wick Video Game With A Big Budget Is Possible
The CEO of Lionsgate Studios weighs in on the upcoming development of a big-budget AAA game set in the John Wick universe.
Lionsgate's CEO has hinted that a AAA game based on the hugely successful John Wick franchise is being considered. In 2014, directors Chad Stahelshi and David Letich brought John Wick to the big screen.
Inspired by the classic lone gunslinger trope popularized by Sergio Leone's Spaghetti Westerns, as well as action beats from anime and martial arts films. As part of a cross-promotion deal with Lionsgate to promote the first John Wick film, the John Wick character has appeared as a legendary outfit in Fortnite as well as a playable heister in Payday 2.
During an earnings call with investors, Lionsgate Studios CEO Jon Feltheimer stated that Lionsgate executives have been fielding proposals for the development of a large, AAA game starring the dapperly dressed John Wick. As the project seems to be in its early stages, Feltheimer kept the details scarce saying, “I don’t want to get ahead of myself here, but we believe there is a big AAA game to be made out of ‘John Wick.’ We have been fielding proposals.
We certainly are interested in moving that forward, but I don’t want to say anything more about that at this time.” Feltheimer then discussed the possibility of more future John Wick properties and praised the John Wick filmmakers for keeping the franchise profitable, successful, alive, and important, with the first three films grossing well over $500 million combined.
Although a dedicated John Wick game exists in Mike Bithell's independent John Wick Hex, this entry provides a small-scale strategy game rather than the big-budget AAA official licensed title that may soon be available. The high-octane gunplay and expertly choreographed fight scenes for which John Wick has become famous appear to be a perfect fit for a massive action game, and this is a project that fans have been eagerly anticipating.
With a rich assassin lore to explore, a AAA entry could provide a compelling narrative that elevates John Wick above the status of just another action shooter. As in Cyberpunk 2077, having Keanu Reeves play the role, both physically and vocally, would bring a large number of fans and popularity to the franchise.
