Actor Will Poulter From GotG 3 Had No Idea What Role He Was Auditioning For

Will Poulter discusses how he didn't realize he was auditioning for the role of Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy until late in the process

In the post-credits sequence of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the Sovereign High Priestess Ayesha revealed a cocoon, hinting at the appearance of the cosmic hero Adam Warlock. Given that this happened before Avengers: Infinity War (2018), many fans assumed the figure would play a role in the Infinity Saga similar to how he did in the comics. However, this was not the case, as Gunn's temporary firing delayed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3—which was initially scheduled to launch Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Regardless, Detroit's Poulter was officially cast as Warlock in October of last year. Poulter has now spoken publicly about auditioning for his top-secret job.

In a recent interview with The Playlist, Poulter discussed his thrilling role and told a typical Marvel narrative about how he was picked for the role. According to the actor, he had no idea he was auditioning for the role of Adam Warlock until the conclusion of the casting process. Read the entire quote below:

"I first auditioned in June of last year [2021], and that was the first time I auditioned, and then I kind of got the role in September, I think. And then started shooting in December…I didn’t know what character, initially, I was auditioning for. I kind of knew sort of closer to the time [of casting] who I was reading for. Although I wasn’t familiar with Adam Warlock beforehand, I was very familiar with Guardians of the Galaxy, and it was kind of my favorite ‘planet’ within the Marvel universe, if you like."

Marvel Studios is renowned for keeping important elements about its films under wraps, frequently offering actors half-truths during the audition process to ensure that nothing escapes. This has been the case with productions such as Spider-Man: No Way Home, Moon Knight, and, most recently, Xochitl Gomez's audition for the role of America Chavez in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. However, Gomez has claimed that she was able to figure out the picture for which she was auditioning since there was a mention to a sorcerer. According to Poulter's narrative, all the actor knew was that he was auditioning for Gunn's MCU finale, which would spark the curiosity of almost any working thespian.

Poulter has been extremely careful not to divulge anything about Adam Warlock's role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 other from discussing his stringent diet and fitness plan. It's unknown if the cosmically endowed figure will be a friend or adversary to Star-Lord and friends. However, Gunn has only had positive things to say about Poulter's performance, which will undoubtedly set Adam Warlock up for future MCU endeavors. However, filming on the film officially concluded earlier this month, thereby ending Bautista's stay in the MCU. The meaning of Vol. 3 for the rest of the Guardians and Adam Warlock will be revealed when the film hits cinemas on May 5, 2023.
