As Maisie Williams Was Playing Arya Stark From Game Of Thrones She Always Thought She Was A Lesbian
Until the last season of Game of Thrones, Maisie Williams was under the assumption that her beloved character Arya Stark was a lesbian
Many reviewers consider HBO's Game of Thrones to be one of the finest television programs ever, and it aired for eight seasons from 2011 to 2019. Over the course of its career, the show earned 59 Emmys, with the last season receiving 32 nominations. Arya Stark is the daughter of Ned Stark and his wife Catelyn, and one of the key characters in Game of Thrones. Arya was a popular favorite for her attitude and tremendous character growth, which saw her become a seasoned assassin by the time Game of Thrones finished. She appeared in 59 out of a total of 73 episodes.
Williams says in an interview with Teen Vogue that she believed Arya was a lesbian until towards the conclusion of Game of Thrones. That's why one specific scene between Arya and Gendry surprised Williams. Many Game of Thrones fans were also under the misconception that Arya was gay, and there was pushback against Arya's romance with Gendry. Read the whole of Williams' remark below:
“The first time that I was surprised by Arya I guess was probably in the final series where she whips off her clothes and sleeps with Gendry. I thought that Arya was queer, you know? So … yeah. That was a surprise.”
Given that Game of Thrones has a number of gay characters, ranging from Gemma Whelan's Yara Greyjoy to Pedro Pascal's Oberyn Martell, it's not a stretch to believe that Arya may have been gay as well. Though sleeping with Gendry might still indicate that Arya is bisexual or pansexual, both Williams' and fans' expectations that Arya was a lesbian were disappointed. Aside from refuting the myth that Arya was a lesbian, her relationship with Gendry was also contentious owing to the two characters' apparent lack of chemistry. While Gendry would fall madly in love with Arya, Arya would be put off by this unexpected emotional connection and would abandon Gendry to resume her adventurous life. This might be seen as Arya accepting the possibility that she is a lesbian after all. However, now that Game of Thrones is over, it appears that Arya Stark's sexuality will be left up to the imagination of the public.
