Bryce Dallas Howard Reacts To Requests To Direct A Star Wars Film

Fans' requests for Bryce Dallas Howard to direct her own Star Wars film are met with grace and a subtle wink from Bryce Dallas Howard

Despite the fact that she is most recognized for her acting, she has been transitioning to directing for some time. She began making short films and music videos when she was able in 2006 with the short film Orchids. When she started directing episodes of the Disney+ Star Wars series The Mandalorian, notably the iconic "Chapter 4: Sanctuary" and "Chapter 11: The Heiress," her directorial career took off. Her directing of that series was so well received that she was requested to direct the Mandalorian episode of The Book of Boba Fett, which aired earlier this year and saw Mando triumphantly return to the Star Wars universe following the conclusion of season 2.

Vanity Fair sat down with Howard to talk about her transition to behind-the-scenes employment. During the chat, they remark that fan desire for her to make her own Star Wars film has been steadily growing. She reacts with dignity, noting that "it's incredible" and that, despite the difficulty, she wishes to "never let anyone down, ever." Here's the rest of her quote:

"I mean, what do you say [to something like that]? It’s unbelievable. I just hope to never let anyone down, ever, as long as I live. That’s not necessarily always possible, but my goodness, you know?"

One fascinating feature of this comment is how she avoids answering the question of whether or not she plans to helm a Star Wars picture. She speaks directly to the supporters' desire to see her career advance, rather than the precise request they have made. This might just be the product of confusing wording, but it's also conceivable that she's attempting to answer the question without indicating that she is truly linked to a new picture, which she won't be allowed to discuss until it's formally revealed.

It's understandable that the Star Wars higher-ups would want to keep Howard around. While her episode of The Book of Boba Fett caused controversy since it detracted from the limited series' primary plot, fans almost universally appreciated her ability to recreate the universe of The Mandalorian in such a clean yet grandiose manner. There's no way they'd neglect something that's grabbing fans' attention and keeping them interested in the franchise's numerous offers.
