During The Love & Thunder Test Screenings, Gorr Was Proved To Be The Most Popular MCU Villain
During test screenings, director Taika Waititi claims that Gorr the God Butcher garnered the highest grades of any Marvel villain
Gorr, first introduced in Thor: God of Thunder #1, is an extraterrestrial on a vengeful mission to murder all the gods in the Marvel Universe after realizing that none of them did anything to save his family. Christian Bale, who starred in The Dark Knight, was cast as the villain, and moviegoers got their first official glimpse at him in Thor: Love and Thunder's second teaser. Gorr's presence in Thor: Love and Thunder makes him the most recent villain from the comics to appear in the MCU, since he was developed after the franchise began in 2012, indicating that Marvel Studios and director Taika Waititi recognized promise in the character.
Waititi is promoting Gorr in what may be one of the MCU's finest villains, with the film less than a month away. Waititi said Gorr scored the best score of any Marvel villain from test audiences who viewed the film in an interview with Fandango All Access to mark the release of tickets for Thor: Love and Thunder. Waititi also previewed the villain's sympathetic aspect, which may have contributed to the strong response from the crowd and is a hopeful indication for the film. Waititi explained:
"I'd say he's the most sympathetic villain they've had. He's also tested the highest out of any villain that Marvel's had."
Despite the MCU's popularity, one critique of their early films was that, aside from Loki, they had a villain issue, with the villains frequently being dark mirrored copies of the hero. Despite this, Marvel Studios has delivered a succession of well-received villains, including Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Kilmonger in Black Panther, and Thanos in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Many of these characters are well-known, like Ego in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Wenwu in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, so Gorr has some large shoes to fill.
Marvel Studios' choice to incorporate Gorr into the MCU, as well as employing an Academy Award-winning actor like Bale, might pay dividends. According to a poll conducted by Fandango, Thor: Love and Thunder is one of the most anticipated films of summer 2022, and if the villain is as good as Waititi claims and the picture is a crowd-pleaser, it may displace Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as Marvel's major summer feature. It remains to be seen if it will be able to surpass Top Gun: Maverick as the most popular film of summer 2022.
