Joyce And Hopper's Reunion In Stranger Things Season 4 Was Captured In A Variety Of Ways
The heartbreaking Joyce and Hopper reunion in Stranger Things season 4 was reshot several times until it was just right, according to David Harbour
After its season 1 launch in 2016, the Netflix sci-fi horror series, created by the Duffer Brothers, became a major global pop-cultural hit. The show centers on a group of friends who battle a supernatural danger and unearth covert government experiments in Hawkins, Indiana. Although the majority of the main actors of Stranger Things are teenagers, Harbour and Winona Ryder play Jim Hopper and Joyce Byers, two responsible adults.
Throughout the course of the series, Hopper and Joyce battled to keep the kids away from Upside Down, but they also grew closer. Then, in season three of Stranger Things, Joyce and Hopper formally declared their love for one another and scheduled a date. Unfortunately, "The Battle at Starcourt" split the pair apart, leading Joyce to believe Hopper had passed away. But Stranger Things season 4 volume 1 immediately informed Joyce that Hopper had lived, and the two would not meet again until the dramatic penultimate episode.
In a recent interview with IndieWire, David Harbour described how the touching Joyce/Hopper reunion in Stranger Things season 4 was captured on camera. Harbour admitted in the interview that they reshot the scene several times to get it just perfect. Harbour eventually proposed the take that was used in the broadcast after "approximately 10 takes." Below, you can read Harbour's explanation of the reunion:
"Initially there were some that we did where she'd run over to me and I just embraced her [right there and then]. We did about 10 takes of it, and then I was like, 'You know what I think it is, man? I just think he's so in survival mode, I don't even think he thinks she's real.' So when she comes over to him there's this moment where he kind of stares, pulls her away from him and looks at her, and then embraces her again." "I was really appreciative of the Duffers allowing me to find the reality of this moment. I had a lot of takes that were big and emotional and all that stuff and then I was like, 'No, it's got to be simple, it's gotta be weirder than that.' And I was very happy we all came to that and that they let us use that take because I think it is the most sophisticated."
After their devastating separation in season 3, viewers of Stranger Things waited a long time to see Joyce and Hopper reconnect, so it seems sensible that the cast and crew would want to nail the intensely emotional scene. Although it could be intriguing to observe how the alternate interpretations handled the reunion, it would have appeared out of character if Hopper abruptly abandoned his stern façade in the Russian prison despite the presence of Joyce. After all, in Stranger Things season 3, the former Hawkins police chief never completely mastered emotional openness. There will be more heartfelt reunions in Stranger Things season 4 volume 1, even though Joyce and Hopper's reunion in episode 1 may have been ideal. While Mike, Will, and Jonathan hurry to find Eleven, Hopper, Joyce, and Murray still need to return quickly to America, where the kids fight Vecna in Hawkins. Hopefully Stranger Things season 4 volume 2 will bring Hopper and Eleven back together. The moment between the adoptive father and daughter will hopefully be just as beautiful given the effort that went into Joyce and Hopper's reunion.
