Kelly Marcel Just Got A Sony Promotion As She Went From Co-Writer To The Director Of Venom 3

Kelly Marcel, co-screenwriter for the first two Venom films, has been named as the third film's director by Marvel and Sony Pictures.

Sony Pictures gave the go-ahead for Venom 3 in April, as announced by Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group Chairman/CEO Tom Rothman at CinemaCon. While little is known about the plot, it was reported in December 2021 that the film would "explore the multiverse" and feature "Venom finally meeting and fighting Spider-Man," though this has yet to be confirmed.

Eddie Brock was displaced from his own dimension into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home and Venom appeared in the post-credits scene. There was also speculation that Andrew Garfield would don the Spider-Man suit once more to take on Venom.

According to Deadline, Marcel will direct the third Venom film, which will star Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom. Marcel, who co-wrote Venom (2018) and Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021), will produce Venom 3 alongside Hardy, and she will also write the screenplay based on a story written by herself and Hardy.

The plot of Venom 3 is still unknown, but it has been confirmed that Hardy will return as the lethal protector in the third installment. Marcel worked as a screenwriter on both previous Venom films, and both times he collaborated with Hardy on the story. She is also credited with writing the screenplay for Fifty Shades of Grey (2015).

Serkis previously expressed his own thoughts on a possible Venom threequel in October 2021, adding that Hardy and Marcel had considered the films as a "trilogy arc." The director also teased a meeting between Spider-Man and Venom, though it was unclear when or how it would take place. "Everyone wants to know when Venom will meet Spider-Man; personally, I don't think it will happen," Serkis said. "I'm joking. It will happen; the only question is when. We don't want to rush anything."
