Leaked Set Photos 'Mortified' Barbie's Margot Robbie
Margot Robbie, who plays Barbie, claims stolen set images of her and co-star Ryan Gosling were "humiliating" and drew significantly more paparazzi than intended.

The number of photographs released from the set of the next live-action film embarrassed Barbie actress Margot Robbie. "I can't tell you how ashamed we were, by the way," Robbie stated on Jimmy Fallon's The Tonight Show. "We appear to be smiling and having a good time, but we're dying on the inside." Dying. "This is the most embarrassing time of my life," I thought. A series of images of Robbie and co-star Ryan Gosling dressed in neon spandex costumes surfaced off the Barbie set in Los Angeles in June, and they quickly went viral online.

"I mean, I knew that we had some exteriors to shoot in L.A.," Robbie continued. "I knew once you were doing exteriors, you’re gonna get papped. There’s probably going to be a little crowd of people who are going to take notice because, you know, we stand out a little bit in those outfits. So I knew there was going to be a little bit of attention, and probably some photos would get out there, but not as they did. It was like mad. It was like hundreds of people watching all time." Warner Bros. revealed the official first look at Barbie in April, with a super-pink picture of Robbie as the eponymous doll, complete with her trademark pink convertible. In addition to the new image, Warner Bros. has stated that Barbie will be released exclusively in cinemas on July 21, 2023.
While the live-action feature has been in the works for some time at Mattel, Robbie was formally cast in the main role in 2019. Robbie has indicated that the purpose of Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig (Little Women) and co-written by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, is to disrupt the audience's expectations. However, in a subsequent interview in 2021, the actor stated that there are certain difficulties in adopting such a famous persona. "Right, it comes with a lot of baggage!” she said. "And a lot of nostalgic connections. But with that come a lot of exciting ways to attack it. People generally hear Barbie and think,' I know what that movie is going to be,' and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they're like, 'Oh, well, maybe I don't...'" Gosling will play Barbie's long-time partner, Ken, who has been with Barbie since their debut in 1961. Will Ferrell has joined the cast as "the CEO of a toy corporation that may or may not be Mattel." Simu Liu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Ariana Greenblatt, and America Ferrera join the cast in unspecified roles. In 2019, Barbie began preproduction.
