On The Set Of Top Gun 2 Jon Hamm Recalls His First Encounter With Tom Cruise

In a recent interview, Jon Hamm recalled meeting Tom Cruise on the Top Gun: Maverick set on his very first day of filming

Vice Admiral Beau "Cyclone" Simpson, the commander of the US Naval Air Forces who recruited Cruise and the squad of trainees for the risky mission, is played by Hamm. Simpson, like Tom Skerritt's Commander Mike "Viper" Metcalf in the first Top Gun film, is the voice of authority trying to keep Maverick in line while warning him of his recklessness. Simpson, on the other hand, has his own commanding officer in the form of Admiral Tom "Iceman" Kazansky, played by Val Kilmer, who has returned to his original role after 36 years.

THR recently spoke with Hamm, who recalls seeing Cruise for the first time on the set of Top Gun: Maverick. When asked about one of his most memorable days on the set, Hamm says his first day was the clear standout. He walked inside a massive aircraft hangar loaded with fighter jets, where he was greeted by a loud Cruise. Read Hamm's account of the incident below:

"The first day. Easy. I walked onto the set, which was in an aircraft hangar. There were two F-18 Super Hornets parked, and there was a two-and-a-half story American flag. Everybody was there in costume and in full gear. I kind of got lost when I first walked to set, but once I finally walked on set, I heard applause as someone said, “There he is!” And I said to myself, “Who is that? I can’t see.” And it was Tom Cruise with a big million-dollar smile. Then he gave me a big hug and said, “Welcome to the show.” And I was like, “Thank you.” It was a pretty good feeling. (Laughs.)"

Cruise is known for his energy and upbeat nature, and his wide, toothy grin is nearly his hallmark. It's no surprise that Hamm received such a warm welcome from the Academy Award nominee. Similarly, when Renée Zellweger met Cruise for the highly acclaimed film Jerry Maguire, she found him approachable and easy to like.

Top Gun: Maverick is shaping up to be the summer movie to beat. The film has received nothing but positive feedback, with spectacular stunts involving the performers in authentic F/A-18 Superhornet fighter planes and great performances by the cast. One of the reasons Cruise has been one of Hollywood's finest leading men for decades is his passion for hard labor while emphasizing friendship with his fellow actors and crew.
