Overwatch 2 Multiplayer Could Be Free-to-Play According To A Leaker
The season's most notable leaker now suggests that Overwatch 2's multiplayer will be free-to-play when it launches

A new leaker has emerged ahead of the Summer Game Fest. The Twitter handle is insider wtf, as well as the account is known as The Snitch. The Snitch has revealed early information on PlayStation's State of Play, Hideo Kojima's Xbox cloud project, the re-release of The Last of Us Part 1 and Hollow Knight: Silksong. They have now shifted their focus to Overwatch 2.
The leak in question is a little mysterious. It says, "We are the hope. We value honor. We are brave. We are the law. We embody compassion. We are determined. We are peace. We have complete freedom to play." This passage is an allusion to Overwatch, with the final line usually reading, "We are Overwatch." The inference is that some Overwatch product will become free-to-play.

Given the absence of context, The Snitch's remark might imply that either the original Overwatch or Overwatch 2 would be released as a free-to-play title. The Snitch's Twitter likes provide further background. "Wanna take a wild guess and claim Overwatch 2 is free to play?" reads one liked tweet. In other words, while it isn't stated explicitly, The Snitch looks to be referring to Overwatch 2 rather than Blizzard's original Overwatch. While The Snitch has shown to be a dependable leaker, albeit through a limited number of disclosures, what gives credibility to the leak is how much sense it makes. Overwatch 2's multiplayer was initially planned to be free for existing Overwatch gamers. Furthermore, it appears like Overwatch 2 might benefit from a larger basis for its player base. It would allow the game to flourish in the same way that Fortnite did, and it would generate some momentum for the Overwatch League.
The Snitch did not address where Blizzard could chose to announce Overwatch 2 making its multiplayer free-to-play. While some may see the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase 2022 as a chance, it would be illogical given Microsoft's unfinished acquisition. Fortunately, Blizzard has scheduled an Overwatch 2 event for Thursday, June 16.
