Scream 6 Resurrects Presumed Dead Star Of Previous Franchise Reboot

Hayden Panettiere is the newest celebrity to join the cast of Scream 6, reprising her role as fan favorite Kirby Reed.

Panettiere joined the franchise as cool girl Kirby Reed in 2011's Scream 4. Despite being brutally attacked by one of the film's Ghostface murderers, Kirby is subsequently discovered to have survived. This fueled speculation that she will return in the 2022 Scream, a theory that was reinforced by strong fan support. She did not, however, reprise her role with franchise veterans Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette.

With Scream 6, that appears to be changing. Panettiere has agreed to portray Kirby in the next sequel, according to Paramount and Spyglass. Details on her return are few for the time being, but with filming expected to begin this summer, that might change soon. Panettiere joins a cast that includes several familiar faces from Scream 5, including Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Mason Gooding, and Jasmine Savoy Brown. Plot specifics are being withheld, but Scream 6 is reported to concentrate around the four survivors of the last Woodsboro killings as they leave town and begin a new chapter.

Panettiere's first onscreen act since her ABC show Nashville ended in 2018 is in Scream 6. Best recognized for her appearances in Heroes, Ice Princess, and, yes, Scream 6, Panettiere has shown to be a versatile actor in a variety of genres. She introduced some lightness to the gritty franchise as Kirby and won people over with her fiery personality. It'll be intriguing to see what Kirby has been up to since her Ghostface attack. In Scream 6, she might play a mentor to the returning survivors, akin to Arquette's Dewey Riley in the previous film. Or, given that 2022's Scream already included a diverse cast of returning actors playing Ghostface specialists, Kirby's job may keep her on par with the franchise's newest entrants.

As heartbreaking as it is to think about, Kirby might be Scream 6's first victim. This is a franchise that enjoys killing off key characters in its first installments, and having a beloved character like Panettiere's die right away would be a startling way to begin the next picture. However, given how many fans hoped for Kirby's comeback in Scream, it may not be a wise decision on the part of the creative team to lose one of their greatest assets so quickly. With Scream 6 rapidly approaching, maybe more information will emerge soon to shed light on what the newest Ghostface has in store.
