Taika Waititi Hints Thor And Jane's MCU Futures Following Love & Thunder
Taika Waititi, director of Love and Thunder, believes fans are misinterpreting Jane's Mighty Thor appearance in the film for what it implies for her and Thor's MCU futures
Although Thor: Love and Thunder will be released five years after Thor: Ragnarok and will follow MCU Phase 4 multiverse projects like as Loki, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the film mostly draws on strands left untied following Avengers: Endgame. With his homeworld devastated and Thanos beaten, the titular hero seeks new meaning in his existence during what Waititi has previously referred to as Thor's mid-life crisis. Thor and Jane reconnect after nearly eight years apart in the new Thor: Love and Thunder trailer, but in roles that differ from their prior appearances.
Waititi spoke with Total Film on Thor and Jane's future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe following Thor: Love and Thunder. Thor is still carrying Stormbreaker, a heavenly weapon fashioned by Eitri (Peter Dinklage) in Avengers: Infinity War to destroy Thanos. However, advertising images depict Jane wielding a reconstructed Mjolnir, Thor's former hammer said to have been destroyed by his sister, Hela (Cate Blanchett). Waititi believes fans will interpret this image as Marvel Studios transferring the Thor franchise torch from Hemsworth to Portman. However, the filmmaker does not believe this is the case. Waititi had the following to say:
"And also, it’s really fun, the idea that Thor [has] got Stormbreaker, that big axe, and now his hammer’s back and it’s in the hands of someone else. It’s no longer his hammer. It’s the idea that someone’s taking his place. I think a lot of fans are gonna potentially assume, ‘Oh, OK, this is the passing on of the torch’... I’m not privy to any plans Marvel has for the future, but I don’t think that’s the case."
Although Waititi maintains he is unaware of any Marvel Studios intentions for the characters, the filmmaker must be aware of alternative paths for both Thor and Jane following the conclusion of the picture he created. Hemsworth has also declared that he wants to continue playing Thor beyond Love and Thunder, and the Asgardian hero will allegedly feature in future installments of the saga. Jane's destiny in the shared universe, on the other hand, remains uncertain.
Jane's reappearance as the Mighty Thor is such a significant point in the film series that limiting her participation to just one film would be a disservice to the character. The Nine Realms were left susceptible to numerous adversaries in the original source material since there was no Thor to guard them. Thor's mantle is finally taken by a mystery lady who is found worthy to wield the great hammer. It is subsequently discovered that Thor's former love, Jane Foster, is fighting cancer. Jane should have a continuous role in the MCU if Thor: Love and Thunder stays true to the source material, since she was a key element of the Secret Wars arc in Marvel Comics.
