Tessa Thompson Clarifies Fan Confusion Over Valkyrie Becoming Asgard's King In Thor 4

Tessa Thompson, who plays Valkyrie in the film Thor: Love and Thunder, reveals why her character is referred to be the King of Asgard and how she will govern in that capacity

Tessa Thompson, who plays Valkyrie in the next Thor: Love and Thunder film, provided some insight into the sort of monarch her character is and how she came to be known as "king" as the head of the Asgardians rather than another regal title. Thompson talked openly about Valkryie's new name and trajectory in an interview with Total Film.

She's a good king, said Thompson. "I am aware that the gendering of her as a king has caused some misunderstanding on the internet. The fact is that she was originally supposed to be given that task by Thor, who then delivered it to her without changing the title because she thought, "Well, I can be king." We considered the outfits she is wearing to be sort of a playful homage to Frida Kahlo.

Thompson said that Valkryie appreciates certain parts of her new kingship but not all of them. The actor added, "She enjoys it. "The bureaucratic aspects of New Asgard have a little less appeal for her. It has become a popular tourist site since the events depicted in earlier movies have really helped to put it on the map. She certainly feels proud, in my opinion. Asgard is not a place, but rather its inhabitants, and this has always been true."

The final remark is an homage to Odin's dialogue with his son in Thor: Ragnarok, the third installment of the trilogy. The All-Father speaks to the thunder god in a vision at the film's conclusion when Thor is feeling helpless in his battle against his wicked sister Hela after she has captured Asgard and damaged Thor's hammer Mjolnir "Asgard is not a location. was never. Asgard maybe this. Where our people stand is in Asgard."

Taika Waititi has also stated that Valkyrie would be grumbling a little bit in Love and Thunder about the more formal responsibilities of being a monarch. In an interview, Waititi stated, "She's got to handle all the things that they never teach you about when you're meant to govern the people, which is deal with all of the infrastructures, figure out the economics, and have representatives from other nations visit."

She thus spends a significant portion of her time doing nothing but controlling her people rather than engaging in combat. Images of Hasbro's Marvel Legend action figure line for Love and Thunder served as an early leak for Valkyrie's king title and the Kahlo-inspired outfit. The pictures included Star-Lord and Groot from the Guardians of the Galaxy as well as King Valkyrie, Ravager Thor, Natalie Portman's Mighty Thor, and King Valkyrie.
