Though the original Joker failed to impress reviewers, it was the surprise smash of 2019, grossing over $1 billion at the movie office and leading the 92nd Academy Awards with 11 nominations, including Best Picture, Director, and Adapted Screenplay. The Joker was mainly ignored during the award event by Bong Joon-Parasite, ho's however Phoenix and Hildur Gunadóttir won Best Actor and Best Original Score, respectively.

The release of the Joker 2 screenplay coincides with a number of interesting news regarding the sequel, including the return of Phoenix as the titular character and co-writer Scott Silver. Furthermore, the script's subtitle "Folie à Deux," which roughly translates to "madness for two" and is a mental condition affecting two or more persons, appears to hint to the potential of several Jokers appearing in the picture. Willem Dafoe has pitched a tale in which a copycat Joker faces out against Phoenix's, to which many audiences have responded enthusiastically.
