The Origins Of Mon Mothma Will Play A Significant Role In Star Wars 2022

The scope of Genevieve O'Reiley's Mon Mothma's arc in the series succeeding Diego Luna's Cassian Andor has been hinted by Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy

Mon Mothma, who first appeared in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi in 1983 and was initially played by Caroline Blakiston, was a former senator of Chandrila who helped organize the Rebel Alliance and was instrumental in the destruction of both Death Stars. Despite having her initial appearance as a youthful Mon Mothma in the closing days of the Republic deleted from Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, O'Reilly returned to the role in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, commanding the then-struggling alliance. O'Reilly joined other Star Wars stars for a photoshoot as part of a presentation of Star Wars' television offerings, while Andor's showrunner gave some insight on Mon Mothma's role in the Rogue One tie-in series.

As part of Vanity Fair's feature on Lucasfilm's current slate of Star Wars series, O'Reilly joined Andor co-star Luna, as well as fellow Star Wars actors Ewan McGregor, Pedro Pascal, Rosario Dawson, Moses Ingram, and Hayden Christensen, for a photoshoot shot by Annie Leibovitz that featured each star in their respective character's costume. Along with the shoot, the cast and crew of Andor, Ahsoka, The Mandalorian, and the soon-to-be-released Obi-Wan Kenobi series revealed what each series would focus on, with Gilroy and Luna hinting at what Cassian and Mon Mothma should expect. Gilroy suggested that the series will have an epic cast, stating, "it is a vast, symphonic, Dickensian ensemble cast," revealing that Mon Mothma's origin tale would be recounted alongside Cassian's.

In addition to outlining Mon Mothma's involvement in the show, Gilroy and Luna previewed the series' plot, describing how Andor would eventually inspire Cassian to join the mission that would not only deal a debilitating blow to the Empire, but also provide fresh hope to the galaxy. Luna described Cassian's narrative as a migrant's trip, indicating that the series will see Cassian transformed by his journeys around the galaxy, with Gilroy revealing that the character would be more cynical at start, evolving into the Cassian shown in Rogue One. Gilroy further previewed the location of Andor and its role in the tale, indicating that spectators would witness worlds devastated by the Empire's invasion, as well as worlds rising in reaction, such as Cassian's adopted home.

Unlike previous series centered on long-established characters, such as Obi-Wan Kenobi and The Book of Boba Fett, Andor appears to be planning a larger-scale plot that will span numerous seasons, completely examining the early days of the Rebel Alliance. While Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars: Rebels showed fans many key points in the Rebellion's formation, much of the faction's early days remain unexplored, with Cassian and Mon Mothma being two characters who haven't gotten much attention when compared to figures like Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), Saw Gerrera (Forrest Whittaker), and Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones). With Gilroy emphasizing the size of its characters, Andor may shape up to present a more expansive tale than viewers may expect.
