Wil Wheaton's Response To Picard's Return In Season 3 Is Cryptic
Wil Wheaton of Star Trek: The Next Generation had a mysterious response when asked if his Traveler character will return for Picard season 3.
Many members of the Next Generation cast have returned for Picard seasons 1 and 2, including Jonathan Frakes as William Riker, Whoopi Goldberg as Guinan, Marina Sirtis as Deanna Troi, Brent Spiner as Data, and John de Lancie as Q. Wheaton was no exception, making a quick surprise appearance in the Picard season 2 finale as Wesley Crusher. The show's Next Generation presence is only growing in season 3; Michael Dorn, LeVar Burton, and Gates McFadden, as well as the majority of the aforementioned performers, have already been announced as returning to their Next Generation roles in Picard season 3. Wheaton, though, was left out of the first announcement, much to the disappointment of fans.
Wheaton discusses his likely future in Picard season 3 with CinemaBlend. When asked if the cameo at the conclusion of season 2 sets up Wheaton's return for season 3, the actor stays tight-lipped about any possible appearance. This is due to spoilers, but Wheaton assures fans that they will be happy. Read his latest remarks below:
"Ok, the thing is, I can’t answer that. Because if I do, it’s gonna give away, inadvertently, some of the story direction. What I can tell you obliquely and unsatisfyingly is I have had some amazing conversations with my castmates, who are my family, and I cannot overstate how incredibly satisfying Season 3 of Picard is going to be for everyone who loves The Next Generation."
Wesley's return to the franchise as a Traveler, an entity who can travel through space and time, was announced in the Picard season 2 episode. Wesley met The Traveler while serving as a cadet on the USS Enterprise in season one of The Next Generation, and the boy's distinctive mind captivated The Traveler. Wesley resigned his rank from Starfleet and went under The Traveler's mentorship to experience many worlds of existence four years later when The Traveler returned. Wesley's presence in Picard season 2 reveals that he has evidently mastered The Travelers' tactics and is now recruiting Supervisors to assist preserve the flow of time, persuading Kore Soong (Isa Briones) to join him and his colleagues on their quest.
Wheaton's return to Picard is still unknown, despite Wesley whisking Kore away to start a new life amid many worlds. A number of Star Trek: Picard cast members, notably Briones, are departing before season 3, lending validity to Wheaton's possible absence, given their two arcs are now intertwined. Despite not being advertised as returning for season 2, the actor made a cameo appearance that had important ramifications for his character's history and future. It's unclear what role Wheaton will play in Picard season 3, but when the program returns to Paramount+ in 2023, only time will tell if Wesley makes an appearance.
