Young President Snow Is Cast In The Hunger Games Prequel Film

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, a prequel film to The Hunger Games, has added Tom Blyth as a youthful President Snow to its ensemble

After The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2 ended the series, Lionsgate wanted to resurrect it with a spinoff, finally contacting Suzanne Collins to adapt the prequel novel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. The studio has set an early 2020 release date for the film adaptation, with Oscar winner Michael Arndt hired to write the screenplay based on Collins' narrative and primary Hunger Games filmmaker Francis Lawrence scheduled to helm. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes has just taken its first big steps in development, with production set to begin in mid-2022 with a November 2023 release date.

Lionsgate has confirmed the first cast member for its The Hunger Games prequel film, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which has been in production for almost two years. Tom Blyth, who starred in Epix's Billy the Kid series, will play a younger version of President Coriolanus Snow in the film. Below is Francis Lawrence's statement on Blyth's casting:

"Coriolanus Snow is many things — a survivor, a loyal friend, a cutthroat, a kid quick to fall in love, and a young man ambitious to his core. Tom's take on the character showed us all the complex ambiguities of this young man as he transforms into the tyrant he would become."

Though he got his start as a young actor in Ridley Scott's Robin Hood film, Blyth has steadily risen in prominence in recent years with to appearances in the forthcoming biographical drama Benediction, HBO's historical drama The Gilded Age, and Epix's namesake Western series as outlaw Billy the Kid. Snow was initially portrayed by Donald Sutherland in the first Hunger Games films and served as the franchise's major antagonist, as an authoritarian dictator of a dystopian future who intends to crush the rebellion with an iron fist. In The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, Katniss uses her public execution to assassinate Julianne Moore's President Coin, ending in his lynch mob death.

The hiring of Blyth as a young President Snow in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is a positive step forward for the Hunger Games prequel film, which is aiming for a 2023 release date. With the film's major lead in place and a director and script in place, it's expected that further cast members will be confirmed in the following weeks, as well as a production start date. In the interim, fans may watch the full first Hunger Games film on Epix.
